Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is LDS Maps?

A.LDS Maps combines the map and search capabilities of Google Maps or Microsoft Maps with information about meetinghouses and congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With LDS Maps you can quickly find the nearest meetinghouses (chapels) and congregations (wards and branches).

Q.How do I search for a Church meetinghouse?

A.You can search two ways: by providing an address or by navigating on an interactive map.

Search by address or location: Enter as much information as you know into the location fields, then click the Search button. LDS Maps will find one or more of the closest meetinghouses and display them on the map with numbered icons Meetinghouse Icon.

Using the interactive map: You can change a map view by using the zoom (double click on the map to zoom in) and pan functions. For help using Google Maps, click Google Maps Help. For help using Microsoft Maps, click Microsoft MapPoint Help. When you can see enough detail on the map, click on the Place Marker Click Mode Button button located in the left pane or upper-left corner of the map and then click on the map. If there is a meetinghouse in the area, one or more meetinghouse icons Meetinghouse Icon will appear.

Q.What if I don't have all the information about a location I want to search?

A.You can do a search with as much information as you know. Searches can be done with any or all of the location fields filled in.

Q.Why did I get a "Did you mean:" page and what does it show me?

A.The "Did you mean:" page shows up when LDS Maps could not exactly match the location information that you entered. The top section of the "Did you mean:" page shows links to locations that are the closest matches to the information that you entered. Clicking on one of those links will show the place marker on the map at that location. The middle section shows related searches that can be done. The bottom section allows you to go back to the search page or place a marker on the map.

Q.What is the difference between "Closest Meetinghouses" and "Assigned Congregations"?

A.The closest meetinghouse is the meetinghouse nearest to the address you provided or the meetinghouse nearest to the marker you placed on the map.

Often, more than one congregation shares the same meetinghouse, so the assigned congregation identifies where members who live at the address you selected attend services. Meeting times for the assigned congregations are also provided. For instance, if two congregations meet on Sunday at the same meetinghouse, one may meet at 9:00 a.m. and the other may meet at 1:00 p.m.

Q.What if no meetinghouse icons Meetinghouse Icon appear after I do a search?

A.In areas where no congregations are available, the LDS Maps will not provide any information. Enter another address or move the Place Marker to another area and search again.

Q.What does the abbreviation (YSA) after the name of a congregation represent?

A.YSA is an abbreviation for young single adult. When included in the name of the congregation, YSA denotes a congregation organized specifically for young single adults (ages 18 to 30). A YSA congregation is just one example of the many Church congregations that have been organized to meet the needs of members. Some congregations are organized for those who speak a specific language, such as Spanish or sign language. Other congregations are organized for single adults (ages 31 and over), single students, and married students.

Q.Why aren't there any directions displayed when I click on the Directions tab?

A.You will see driving directions only if a starting location and a destination have been determined. If a starting location has been determined but a meetinghouse has not been selected, go back to the Places tab and click on a meetinghouse or a congregation.

Q.When I click on one of the turn-by-turn instructions shown in the Directions list, it changes the map to show that intersection. How do I display the entire driving route again?

A.Click on the heading in the left pane that says "Drive" or on the total distance or time estimate to see the full route displayed in the map view.

Q.Why is there nothing listed under "Closest Meetinghouses" or "Assigned Congregations"?

A.Either the boxes next to these headings are not checked, or there are no congregations at the place on the map.

Q.Can I use LDS Maps to get the address or telephone number for missionaries?

A.LDS Maps is designed to provide information about meetinghouses and congregations. Your local Church leaders can help you contact missionaries, or you can click here for more information.

Q.What can I do if a meetinghouse icon Meetinghouse Icon points to the wrong location for a meetinghouse?

A.Navigate on the map to the correct location of the meetinghouse, click on the Place Marker Click Mode Button button, and then click on the correct location on the map (you may want to use a satellite or aerial image to identify the correct location). When you are satisfied with the location of the Place Marker, click on the Feedback button located just above the top-right corner of the map. When the Feedback page opens, enter any additional information, including name and e-mail address, and then click the Submit Feedback button. The location information is automatically sent to Church headquarters for review.

Q.If I move, how can I find my new ward or branch?

A.Enter your address and click the Search button. Your new ward or branch should be listed under Assigned Congregations. The first ward or branch listed is generally the ward or branch assigned to the location you entered. Other congregations listed may include wards or branches for students, young single adults, or members who have special needs or who speak a specific language. Click on the congregation you want to attend, and a window will open to display details about the congregation, including the name and phone number of the congregation leader.
